I understand the reasoning.  The patch looks OK as far as it goes.  I
don't doubt that it works.  I just want to see if we can come up with
something more general-purpose than the pattern that this patch
represents.

I had already been looking at making the process of adding a new action
easier and less error-prone.  (Ethan pointed out that there are some
nonobvious places that need updates.)  It's a logical further step to
make the process of adding more vendor extensions less error-prone.
