This looks good to me, thanks. I'll assume that you'll fold this into
your larger patch when it's ready.

BSD make is supposed to work--I've worked hard to avoid GNU make
extensions. Sorry about that. I sent out a patch series that fixes
the two obvious problems that I found, starting here:

Still, I'm happy to strengthen the recommendation or weaken the claim
toward BSD make, if you like.
