i got same error, but then i found a way around it using following command:

$ sudo insmod datapath/linux/openvswitch.ko
insmod: error inserting 'datapath/linux/openvswitch.ko': -1 Unknown symbol
in module

$ *sudo modprobe gre *
$ sudo insmod datapath/linux/openvswitch.ko
$ sudo lsmod | grep -i open
openvswitch            75841  0
gre                    12989  1 openvswitch

Hope this helps.

Regards.
