According to the opensuse.org package search at, the version of
GNU Make supplied with SLES/SLED 10 is 3.81:
http://software.opensuse.org/search?baseproject=SUSE%3ASLE-10&p=1&q=make

So it sounds like you're behind on your package upgrades, even
for SUSE 10.  Could you please try this with the up-to-date make
package and let us know whether the results change?
