Try the "ovs-ofctl status <bridge>" command.  It contains a bunch of  
information that's useful.  The lines you are particularly interested  
in are "remote.state" and "remote.state-elapsed".  If "remote.state"  
is "ACTIVE", then you are successfully connected to the controller.
