[ovs-discuss] OVS kernel module in vanilla kernel vs kernel module from OVS source tarball

I apologize if this documented somewhere since it seems like it should be a
FAQ, but for the life of me I can't seem to find the answer searching.

What exactly is the difference between using the openvswitch kernel module
from a recent vanilla kernel.org kernel, and using the kernel module that
comes in the OVS tarball?

I am considering upgrading to kernel 3.9.x, which the one in the OVS 1.10.0
tarball does not support. Is there a reason not to use the one in the
vanilla kernel?

My gut feeling on these things is generally to use the one bundled with the
vanilla kernel, assuming that kernel is recent, as then compile problems
are not an issue.

I tried to look in the ovs module from the vanilla kernel source to find
any sort of relevant version string, to no avail.
