[ovs-discuss] Is kernel module mandatory?

Hi All.

Please forgive me my stupid question as I am somewhat new to openvswitch.

Installing ovs from source code, in the INSTALL file I got impression that
kernel module is optional for operation of the openvswitch, however, if I
do not load openvswitch kernel module, I can create bridges and ports using
ovs-vsctl but they do not seem to manifest in the OS. For example, I cannot
bring up a port and I get messages like "No such device". So, am I
misunderstanding something. Do I have to have kernel module loaded?
